Nanegalito Cloud Forest Reserve is a lush, biodiverse protected area on the western slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, offering rich opportunities to explore pristine cloud forest ecosystems and observe rare wildlife in an extraordinary montane environment.
Located approximately 45 kilometers northwest of Quito in Pichincha province, Nanegalito Cloud Forest Reserve spans steep Andean slopes covered by dense, mist-shrouded cloud forest. This reserve is a critical conservation area protecting some of Ecuador’s richest biodiversity, with a complex ecosystem that supports hundreds of bird species, including endangered and endemic varieties like the Andean cock-of-the-rock and the velvet-purple coronet hummingbird. The terrain is rugged, with altitudes ranging from roughly 1,300 to over 3,000 meters (4,264 to 9,843 feet) above sea level, creating diverse microclimates and supporting a variety of orchids, bromeliads, ferns, and towering trees draped in moss and lichens. Historically, the area has been championed by local and international conservationists aiming to preserve these dwindling cloud forests threatened by deforestation and agricultural encroachment. Visitors to Nanegalito can enjoy numerous hiking trails that traverse primary forest, secret waterfalls, and birdwatching towers, making it a prime spot for both eco-tourists and serious naturalists. Key landmarks include the famous mirador viewpoints overlooking deep valleys and the Río Nanegalito canyon. Its proximity to Quito allows for accessible day trips or extended stays in rustic lodges and eco-hostels within or near the reserve. The reserve is also a research site for studying climate impacts on montane ecosystems, adding scientific importance to its natural beauty and outdoor appeal.
